John In Uganda

This spot will serve as a temporary blogspot for John as he is filming in Uganda over the next few weeks.

A couple of days ago I blogged on our "silver and gold" as a resource even the apostles did not have available to them. Today I met a man who believes he can win the war in the north, share Christ with hundreds of thousands and "release Uganda into its prophetic destiny" for $100,000.

I attended services this morning at Victory Church of Christ Ministries in the Kampala suburb of Luziri. Their pastor, George Oduch, was recommended to me by Col. Charles Angina, the military attache to the Ugandan Embassy in Washington, who I met the week before I left.

The church I attended last week was the largest in Uganda, with 10,000 members, six choirs and the look and feel of an American megachurch. Victory meets just outside the largest prison in Uganda in a modest cinderblock building that seats about a hundred. But Pastor Oduch is an inspired leader with a God sized vision.

Oduch sees the rebellion as "firmly in control of demonic powers" that can only be overcome by the gospel of peace preached with power. As the leader of evangelism for the Kampala Pastors Fellowship, Oduch has developed a set of twelve key points in consultation with local and northern church leaders. Key excerpts:

- "[T]he key to the achievement of peace in Northern Uanda is the need for the church to make a special evangelistic campaign to reach thousands of people already gathered in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps all over the North with the message of the Gospel." (Oduch points out that the residents of the country's 153 IDP camps are captive audiences who "do not need any advert to call them" and flock to attend any meeting with outsiders.)

- "[T]he preaching of the gospel has the power according to Luke 10:1-6, 17-19 and Ephesians 3:1-10 and 6:10-15 to subdue the principalities and powers of war over Northern Uganda releasing peace and great blessings upon the inhabitants."

- "[I]f this is done and peace restored, a revival that is due in Uganda shall break forth releasing Uganda into its prophetic destiny of reaching nations for Christ."

- "[T]hrough the evangelistic campaign in the camps, the North will quickly be taken for Christ as people who leave the camps when peace settles in the region will be dispersed all over the region thus freeing it from the curse of idolatry."

In a message he wrote after visiting the Bobi IDP camp in Gulu (near Doreen's home), Oduch says that "peace will come swiftly through the preaching of the gospel . . . . Then we shall see the glory of God fall upon Northern Uganda releasing it to be a great blessing to the rest of the country."

In short, Oduch looks north, sees a Goliath shaking his fist at God, and runs toward the battle line, eagerly anticipating victory. He looks at the IDP camps and sees a vast reserve army waiting to be unleashed on the forces of darkness. What an awesome perspective. This is someone who truly sees our world from a vantage point in the Kingdom of God.

I asked Oduch how we could pray for him. Here's what he told me:

- Their greatest need is for logistical support, meaning PA systems and transportation to the camps. He showed me a budget for equipping and supporting five mobile units that totaled a very modest $102,851. Oduch has never sought support from anyone outside the local church community (and didn't pressure me). But he welcomes assistance from anyone in the body of Christ.

- Please pray that God would stir up pastors and churches in Kampala and the north to take the gospel to the IDP camps and the surrounding areas.

- Please pray that Uganda would have a smooth political transition and enter into its prophetic destiny.

- Please pray that God's will for Uganda would be done.

I am also going to pray that God would show me how I can help Pastor Oduch and Victory Church of Christ fulfill their vision.

Thank you for your prayers. I can't tell you how encouraging and refreshing it was to meet with Pastor Oduch and hear his vision for this country.

P.S. In case you're wondering, this church is not affiliated with the denomination called Church of Christ in the U.S. They have a rocking choir and keyboardist. :)
